Your Faith Does Not Cover Your Child (Train them up)

Your Faith and Salvation are personal. My faith doesn’t cover my children and their sin doesn’t condemn me. Although it seems like many parents try and make both of those things a reality in their home.

As parents we need to take time to train our children on the reasons behind our faith. And then live out that faith. That doesn’t mean we can be sinless examples to our children. It means we admit when we have sinned and repent in an open and observable way.

Many times while we are worried about getting our children to school and taking them to multiple sports practices and games, we forget to prepare them for the spiritual battles they will face in high school, college and life. Which is unfortunate, because their eternal soul is much more valuable that their athletic or scholastic prowess and earning potential.

What do we as parents do? I won’t pretend to know exactly. But here is what I am going to do based on the Biblical directive; “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Prov. 22:6)

  1. Commit to understanding why I believe. My experiential faith may not work for others.
  2. Continue to read, learn and share the doctrine, life examples and Word of God as given to us in the Bible. “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
  3. Prepare for the tough questions about why I believe and be ready to give a defense. We should research and formulate our answers and practice them. (Plenty of online videos and books)
  4. Put myself in situations that require me to practice my evidentiary and researched defense of my faith.
  5. Schedule time to train my children and equip them with the knowledge they need to answer the big questions that they will be asked from non-believers and false teachers.
  6. Put my children in controlled situations to experience atheistic and/or false doctrine. And then debrief and examine the proper defense and theology.
  7. Prepare my children to know that even if a teacher or authority figure makes a good case or puts on a good presentation against the existence of God, it does not mean it is true. (This happens in college all the time)

Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die. The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself. “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each according to his conduct,” declares the Lord God . “Repent and turn away from all your transgressions, so that iniquity may not become a stumbling block to you. Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! For why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the Lord God . “Therefore, repent and live.”

The Idols Can’t Stand

What “lofty things” are being “raised up against the “knowledge of God” today?

I’m fairly certain it’s the same lofty things that have always been used by satan to try and blind people from the knowledge of God.

  • False wisdom
  • Worldly riches
  • Self righteousness
  • Naturalism
  • Lustful desires
  • Thirst for power and control
  • Vanity

Which of these idols have you allowed to be put in the high places of your life? Which one is impacting your family?

Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

1 John 2:15-17

What fortresses of speculation have you allowed to stand, in your sphere of influence, that blind others from the knowledge of God?

We must use prayer to win these battles against anything raised up against the knowledge of God in our life and in the life of others.

Driven by our desires, our words and actions reveal what we value the most. And instead of worshipping and praying to our God who provides for all our needs, we worship our desires instead. We focus our extra time and attention on those desires and forget the source of our salvation.

These desires become idols to us if the desired object is not being sought after for the glory of God or the good of His people.

Paul wrote to the church at Corinth about the way we are to battle against such things, and in Romans we are told that Jesus saves us from our sins.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

2 Corinthians 10:3‭-‬5 NASB

Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

Romans 7:24-25

For an example of God’s anger when His people worship idols, see Exodus 3.

Satan’s Obsession With Killing Babies

Disclaimer: Much sarcasm exists in this post.

Discussing third-trimester and healthcare assisted postpartum infanticide seems to be the current (although not new) topic that makes you a controversial figure. Who would have guessed it?

Infanticide is not new in human history and still occurs today is some cultures. It is Satan’s same old tactic just repackaged and kicked further down the timeline.

Anybody else remember when Satan used leaders in certain nations to kill babies in an attempt to thwart God’s plans? I seem to remember a couple of instances (see Moses and Jesus).

How could those leaders (Pharaoh, Herod) be blinded by power to the point of calling for the sanctioned murder of babies? Well, there they are the pieces just came together. It’s the same blinding desire for power and wealth that drives our “leaders” to cheer for the legalized murder of a baby that is within a few weeks of birth and even nearly born. (See New York and Gov. Cuomo)

These leaders are looking for votes and fame to keep them in power.

Sear your conscience for a vote you whitewashed tombs! This is to our whole country’s detriment.

To allow this in a law with no requirement other than for the mental well-being of the mother, who can easily give that baby up for adoption, is absolutely immoral. (Insert opposing view from manic choice-bater emotional breakdown theater skit right here. )

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

Sinners Helpless Ungodly Enemies, Christ Died For Us, Justified Saved Reconciled Exulting

Christ’s death has transformed those who believe in Him.

We were sinners who were helpless and ungodly enemies of God, yet Christ died for us. Believers are justified and saved, reconciled with God and exulting in Him. We take on Christ’s righteousness in the eyes of God. Thank You, Jesus!

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Romans 5:6‭-‬11 NASB

God Still Remembers You

God still remembers you.

When you don’t feel Him, He may be closer than He has ever been. (adapted Billy Graham quote)

Ephraim’s descendants were defiant, idolatrous and many other sinful things. God proclaimed their sinfulness many times. But God still remembered them then and still does today.

He remembers us all no matter how much we push Him away with our sinful nature.

Call on Him and trust in His son Jesus and receive His mercy. That’s the first step you have to take. It is not a step in the dark. Our faith is not blind or mindless. It is reasonable and evidential.

Trust in Him and you will be forgiven. Then repent, ask others to forgive you as needed and forgive yourself. That’s step two.

Believe in the power of God and His process of restoration, discipline and sanctification. And know that He will not forget you.

Lift up your head weary sons and daughters of God. For Jesus will soon come and make all things new. Lean not on your own understanding but be renewed in mind and spirit and know that He is God.

“Is Ephraim My dear son? Is he a delightful child? Indeed, as often as I have spoken against him, I certainly still remember him; Therefore My heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him,” declares the Lord .
